Connect Claude to Roam
The Roam connector lets Claude work with your Roam data: ask about your associations, owner balances, vendor bills and reports, with the same access you have in Roam.
Before you begin
- A Claude plan that can use connectors, and a Roam staff login.
- Your organisation's Roam administrator must allow outside AI tools: in Roam, Settings › AI Access › Organisation, turn on Allow external AI access.
- On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an Owner of your Claude organisation adds the Roam connector once. Members then connect with their own Roam login.
Connect
- In Claude, open Connectors, find Roam and choose Connect. If Roam is not listed yet, add a custom connector with the address
https://mcp.roamstay.com/mcp. - On the Roam page, enter your Roam address: the first part of the address you sign in to Roam at, for example yourcompany for yourcompany.roamstay.com. Choose Continue.
- Sign in to Roam if you are not signed in already.
- Check the organisation and what Claude will be able to read, then choose Allow. If it shows the wrong organisation, choose Switch account first.
- You are back in Claude, and Roam shows as connected.
To use Roam in Claude Code, run claude mcp add --transport http roam https://mcp.roamstay.com/mcp and sign in when Claude Code asks.
Ask Claude
Claude works in one association at a time. Start with what you can see, then pick one:
- "Which associations can I see in Roam?"
- "Use Chattahoochee Reserve."
- "Which owners have a balance due?"
- "Show unpaid vendor bills."
- "Show the aging report for this association."
What Claude can and cannot do
- It sees only what you can see. Claude uses your Roam login. It cannot open associations, modules or records you cannot open yourself, and your organisation's role limits still apply.
- It reads by default. A new connection can read the modules your role allows.
- It never saves anything on its own. Where your organisation allows it and you switch it on, Claude can prepare a new task or work order; Roam shows a preview, and nothing is saved until you confirm it.
- Some actions are never available to AI tools: moving money, refunds, voids, approvals and sending email.
Change or turn off the connection
- In Roam: Settings › AI Access › Your tokens. The connection is listed as Claude (connector). Edit capabilities switches individual capabilities off, for example accounting; Disable pauses it; Revoke ends it at once.
- In Claude: open Connectors, choose Roam and disconnect it.
- A connection lasts 90 days. After that, Claude asks you to sign in again.
For administrators
- Allow external AI access turns AI tools on or off for the whole organisation. Turned off, every connection stops at once.
- Role limits set the most each role may do: none, read only, or read and write.
- Tokens in your organisation lists every connection with its owner and last use. Revoke all tokens ends every connection.
Troubleshooting
- "We couldn't find that Roam." Check the address you sign in to Roam at, or ask your Roam administrator.
- Claude says external AI access is turned off. Ask your Roam administrator to turn on Allow external AI access.
- Claude asks you to sign in again. The connection reached 90 days, was revoked, or AI access was turned off. Connect again.
- "This sign-in request has expired." Start again from Claude; a sign-in must finish within 10 minutes.
